Homelessness and Mental Health

Worrying about housing can be exhausting on its own. Add anxiety, depression, trauma, or any other mental health struggle, and it can feel like you are trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing. If you live in or around Gnosall and you are at risk of homelessness (or already without a safe place to stay), there is local help - and it is OK to ask for it.

Why Stafford Borough Council links homelessness and mental health

Housing problems and mental health often feed into each other. Stress from rent arrears, eviction notices, or relationship breakdown can make symptoms worse. And when your mental health is low, it can be harder to keep on top of forms, appointments, and phone calls that housing services tend to involve. Stafford Borough Council has a dedicated page that brings the two together and explains what support may be available and how to approach the council.

If you are worried about losing your home - what to do first

  • Do not wait for things to hit crisis point - contact Stafford Borough Council as soon as you think you might become homeless.
  • If your mental health is making it hard to manage the process, say so early. It can help the council understand what support you might need to engage.
  • Gather the basics if you can (tenancy agreement, letters from landlord, proof of income or benefits), but do not let missing paperwork stop you making contact.

If you need mental health support alongside housing help

If you are struggling day-to-day, it is worth reaching out for mental health support at the same time as housing advice. Your GP is often a sensible first step for non-urgent mental health concerns, and they can signpost local NHS support.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, or you feel you cannot keep yourself safe, call 999.

For NHS urgent advice (including mental health), you can also use: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/urgent-and-emergency-care/nhs-111/

Local and official places to keep handy

If there is one takeaway: do not try to juggle this on your own. If housing is wobbling and your mental health is taking a hit, start with Stafford Borough Council and be upfront about what you are dealing with. That single step can open the door to proper support.
