Bonfires

Bonfires can be an enjoyable way to dispose of garden waste or celebrate special occasions, but it's essential to be aware of the regulations and best practices to ensure safety and consideration for your neighbours.

Legal Requirements

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, there are legal requirements and restrictions for having a bonfire in your garden. Here are the key points to keep in mind:

  • Time Restrictions: Bonfires should not cause a nuisance to your neighbors. Avoid lighting bonfires in the evening or at night, and never burn materials on Sundays or on any other day that is prohibited by your local council.
  • Smoke and Odour: Bonfires should not produce excessive smoke, which can be a health hazard and a source of annoyance to others. Avoid burning materials that release thick, black smoke or noxious fumes.
  • Controlled Burning: Materials burned should be suitable for a bonfire and not contain hazardous substances, plastics, rubber, or other materials that can emit toxic fumes when burned.
  • Distance from Boundaries: Bonfires should be at least 2 meters away from property boundaries, fences, trees, and buildings to prevent the risk of spreading flames.

Best Practices

To be a considerate neighbour and promote safety, consider the following best practices when having a bonfire in your garden:

  • Notify Neighbours: Inform your neighbours in advance about your bonfire plans to minimise any inconvenience or concerns they may have.
  • Choose Suitable Weather Conditions: Check weather conditions and avoid burning on windy days, as strong winds can carry smoke and sparks, potentially causing safety hazards.
  • Keep a Hose or Water Source Nearby: Have a hose or buckets of water readily available to control the fire and extinguish it quickly if necessary.
  • Monitor the Fire: Stay with the bonfire at all times while it is burning and ensure it is fully extinguished before leaving it unattended.

Alternative Disposal Methods

Consider alternative methods of waste disposal, such as composting or using local recycling and waste collection services, which may be more convenient and environmentally friendly than burning garden waste.
