Doorstep Scams

Doorstep scams are one of those things that sound obvious until someone catches you on a busy day. A knock at the door, a convincing story, a bit of pressure, and suddenly you are agreeing to work you did not ask for, handing over cash, or sharing personal details. It can happen to anyone in Gnosall - especially if the caller plays on urgency or worry.

Common doorstep scam tactics (and the red flags)

  • "We are working nearby" and they have "spare materials" left over
  • Pressure to decide now - "today only", "your roof is unsafe", "your driveway is dangerous"
  • Asking to come inside, or to look at your meter, loft, fuse box or paperwork
  • Requesting cash up front, bank transfers on the spot, or a "deposit" before a proper quote
  • No written quote, no paperwork, vague company details, or they avoid giving an address

If you feel rushed, that is your cue to slow everything down. Genuine traders will not mind you taking time to think, getting another quote, or checking details.

What to do if someone turns up uninvited

  • Do not open the door fully - use a chain, window, or speak through the letterbox if you prefer
  • Say "No thank you" and close the door. You do not owe an explanation
  • Never agree to work on the doorstep - ask for details in writing and tell them you will get back to them
  • If you feel uneasy, call a friend, neighbour or family member before doing anything
  • If someone is aggressive or you feel threatened, call 999

Best rule of thumb: if it is important, it will still be important tomorrow. Take a breath, take your time, and do not let anyone hustle you on your own doorstep.
