Electrical Safety

Most of us only think about electrics when something stops working - or when a charger starts getting worryingly hot. A quick bit of prevention can save a nasty shock (literally) and help keep homes and rented properties in Gnosall safe.

What Stafford Borough Council says to check

Stafford Borough Council has a clear, practical page on electrical safety, including what to look out for and where responsibilities sit in rented homes. It is a good first stop if you are unsure what counts as "safe" or what should be sorted quickly.

Stafford Borough Council - Electrical safety

Simple warning signs at home

  • Flickering lights, buzzing sockets, or switches that feel warm
  • Scorch marks, a burning smell, or crackling from plugs and sockets
  • Repeatedly tripping fuses or the consumer unit (fuse box)
  • Damaged leads (especially on kettles, heaters, and extension leads)
  • Overloaded adaptors and daisy-chained extension leads

If something feels unsafe, trust your instincts - switch off at the mains if you can do so safely, and get it checked.

If you rent in Gnosall - what to do

If you are a tenant and you spot a potential electrical hazard, report it to your landlord or letting agent in writing and keep a copy. The council page above explains the general approach and where to go next if issues are not being dealt with. If you need wider housing advice, start with Stafford Borough Council and follow their guidance.

Who to contact in an emergency

  • If there is immediate danger (fire, sparks, someone injured), call 999.
  • If you suspect an electrical supply problem outside your home (power lines, street supply, cut-out), contact the electricity network operator via National Grid - Find my network operator.
  • For local updates and community info, you can also keep an eye on Gnosall Parish Council.
