Fireworks

Fireworks can be brilliant fun, but they are also a proper safety issue - especially in a village where gardens, pets, livestock and narrow lanes are all close together. If you are planning a few rockets in Gnosall this season, here is a simple, local-friendly checklist to help everyone have a good night (and keep all their fingers).

Before you light anything

  • Buy from a reputable seller and check the fireworks are CE marked or UKCA marked.
  • Read the instructions in full - every time - and follow the safety distances on the label.
  • Think about neighbours, pets and animals. A quick heads-up to nearby homes can make a big difference.
  • Pick a clear, open area away from sheds, fences, trees, parked cars and anything that could catch fire.
  • Have a bucket of water or hose nearby, plus a torch, and keep children well back.

Lighting and watching safely

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has plain-English guidance worth a quick look before the big night: HSE - Using fireworks safely.

  • Only light one firework at a time and never go back to a firework once it has been lit.
  • Stand well back straight away and keep spectators at the recommended distance.
  • Never put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix - keep whoever is lighting them sober and sensible.

Misfires, disposal and the morning after

  • If a firework does not go off, do not approach it. Wait (follow the instructions), then soak it in water before disposing of it.
  • Soak spent fireworks and sparklers in a bucket of water overnight before putting them in the bin.
  • Check the garden afterwards for hot debris, especially near fences, dry leaves and lawns.

Local help and who to contact

If you are planning something bigger than a small family garden display, start by checking the right official advice and local rules. These pages are good jumping-off points:

If you believe fireworks are being used dangerously or someone is at immediate risk, treat it as an emergency and call 999. Otherwise, use the relevant council route above to report ongoing issues.
