Several major incidents have kept firefighters stretched during the current heatwave. On Sunday 12 July, 11 fire engines were needed to tackle a grass fire in Stafford, with additional support called in from Shropshire Fire and Rescue. The following day, multiple crews responded to another grass fire off Adbaston Lane, Stafford, with hotspots still being dampened down as of Tuesday 14 July.
In Cannock, crews attended a fire covering around 50 by 100 metres on Shoal Hill Common on Monday, and the burned remains of a disposable barbecue were also found in the Cannock Chase area. Firefighters warned it had the potential to start a serious wildfire. A deliberate grass fire measuring 100 by 100 metres was also tackled in Rugeley on Friday evening.
Why the risk is higher right now
Nick Jones, Head of Prevent, Protect and Partnerships, said that prolonged dry weather and strong winds forecast for this week mean outdoor fires can spread rapidly and become very difficult to control.
What you can do to help
- Do not use barbecues in open spaces or on dry grassland
- Dispose of cigarettes and rubbish safely and properly
- Do not enter open water to cool down
