Councillor Mark Winnington is due to be formally inaugurated at a ceremony at the Gatehouse Theatre on Saturday 16 May, taking over from outgoing Mayor Councillor Jenny Barron. His wife, Rosie, becomes Mayoress.
The occasion - known as 'Mayor Making' - will be followed by a church service and a military parade through Stafford town centre at around 12.45pm, with hundreds of people expected to line the streets.
Councillor Winnington has represented the Gnosall and Woodseaves Ward on Stafford Borough Council since first being elected in 2003. He has also served as a Staffordshire County Councillor and is a member of Ranton Parish Council.
Speaking about the role, he said: "This is a great honour and I thank everyone for putting their faith in me. I was born here, I went to school here, and I live and work here - and that makes me so proud to now be the 'first citizen' of an area I really cherish."
During his year in office, he will be raising funds for two local charities:
- Katharine House Hospice
- Staffordshire Air Ambulance
The role of Mayor dates back more than 400 years. Councillor Frank James, who represents Holmcroft ward and previously served as Mayor in 2024/25, has been appointed Deputy Mayor.
