University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has declared a critical incident after both Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital came under exceptional pressure.
The situation has been caused by a combination of high patient numbers, delays in discharging patients, and significant strain on local ambulance services - making it harder to move patients through hospitals safely and quickly.
What the hospitals are doing
The Trust says its priority is safe care for those who need it most. In response, staff are being redeployed to the busiest areas, urgent and emergency treatment is being prioritised, and NHS partners are working together to improve patient flow.
How you can help
If your condition is not life-threatening, please use one of the following instead of going to A&E:
- NHS 111 (online or by phone)
- Your local pharmacy
- Your GP
- A walk-in centre
Emergency departments should only be used for serious or life-threatening conditions.
The Trust has thanked staff for their hard work and asked patients and local communities for their patience and understanding. Further updates will be issued as the situation develops.
