New petrol station and drive-thru to open near Stafford by 2027

A major new Shell forecourt is under construction at junction 14 of the M6, with plans to open in April 2027.

Gnosall commuters using the M6 on a regular basis may be interested in the announcement of a new site catering for passing motorists on the busy stretch of motorway.

The Kay Group, one of the UK's top independent forecourt operators, has broken ground on a new Shell petrol station at Stafford Gate Service Station, next to junction 14 of the M6. The site sits beside a busy roundabout used by more than 44,000 vehicles a day.

The project appears to have been a long time coming. The Blackburn-based company spent 10 years navigating what it describes as a demanding planning process, with delays caused by complex road improvement works, the Covid pandemic, and the M6 smart motorway conversion.

What to expect

  • Four fuel islands with all petrol and diesel grades, plus AdBlue pumps
  • Two electric vehicle (EV) charging points
  • A large Costa drive-thru
  • A Londis shop with Greggs and Subway inside
  • A five-bay jet wash hub, two vacuums, and an air and screenwash machine
  • A free ATM and external seating

Green credentials

The site will include solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system feeding a 30,000-litre tank to supply the jet wash facility. The Kay Group says this alone could cut water usage by 50%. Energy-saving lighting, daylight sensors, and optimised fridge temperatures are also part of the plan.

A big site

Covering 1.86 acres, the forecourt is one of the largest in The Kay Group's 25-strong portfolio and will be directly managed by the company's own staff. The wider 16-acre development around it has outline planning permission for commercial and leisure use, potentially including a David Lloyd sports centre.

Construction of the forecourt shell is already under way while 35 weeks of road improvement works, which began in early July, continue alongside it.
