Staffordshire Police are urging residents across Staffordshire to register their CCTV and doorbell cameras as part of a county-wide campaign to help solve crimes that matter to your community.
The Staffordshire Police CCTV Registry launched on Monday 10 August, and it takes less than a minute to register your camera. Once signed up, you will receive alerts by email or text when a crime occurs nearby, with a link to upload any relevant footage you may have captured.
The scheme does not give police any access to your cameras or recordings. You stay in control of what you share, and your personal details will not be publicly visible. Officers will only see cameras marked on a digital map, alongside footage you choose to provide.
Police say the scheme could help tackle issues including:
- Burglary and theft
- Anti-social behaviour
- Nuisance off-road bikes
- Drug-related activity
Signing up does not mean you will need to attend court or become involved in legal proceedings.
Local policing Chief Superintendent Victoria Lee said: "We know that many people and businesses now have their own CCTV and camera doorbell systems, which can prove vital in establishing circumstances around criminality and in some cases even result in positive prosecutions."
Recent examples where CCTV footage made a difference include a serious stabbing in Stafford in May and vehicle thefts in South Staffordshire last month. In one case, a man recognised himself in a CCTV appeal following a purse theft in Cannock and handed himself in.
