Second fire breaks out at Cannock Chase in two days

Firefighters are battling a large blaze at Cannock Chase — the second fire to hit the popular beauty spot in just 48 hours.

Five fire engines and two rangers were called to land near the Seven Springs car park on Cannock Chase at around 1:30pm on Saturday. The cause of the fire is not yet known, and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is asking people to stay away from the area.

It follows a fire on Thursday, which was started by a disposable barbecue and destroyed an area of protected heathland roughly the size of a football pitch in Sherbrook Valley. That blaze also killed wildlife, including toads and adders.

Disposable barbecues are banned on Cannock Chase because of the fire risk they pose.

The Cannock Chase Special Area of Conservation Partnership said the latest fire is on forestry land near Seven Springs, and urged visitors to stay alert during the current dry spell. They added: "Even if you can smell burning but can't see smoke or flames, it could be the start of a fire. Please report anything you are concerned about."
