The decision follows five proposals submitted by local councils in November 2025 and a public consultation that ran from February to March this year. The new councils will follow existing district, borough and city council boundaries.
What does this mean for Gnosall residents?
In practical terms, not much will change in the short term. Day-to-day services including bin collections, street cleaning, parks, highways, children's services and adult social care will all continue as normal.
The two new unitary councils will take over from the current ten county, city, district and borough councils when they come into being in April 2028. Elections for shadow councils are scheduled for May 2027.
Councillor Martin Murray, Chair of the Staffordshire Leaders Board, said councils were "united in our commitment to a smooth transition with no disruption to the services residents rely on."
Local councils will now begin drawing up detailed plans for how services and decision-making will transfer to the new authorities.
