The lodge praised the group for two things in particular: the way they keep their stretch of towpath well-maintained and welcoming, and their support for young people working towards their Duke of Edinburgh award.
The donation will be added to money raised at the recent Gnosall Canal Festival, with funds going towards future volunteer projects. One major scheme already in the pipeline is a full refurbishment of the towpath access ramp at Bridge 34, planned for 2027.
New volunteers welcome
Following strong interest at the Festival, the group is hoping to welcome new members. Volunteer tasks include:
- Improving the towpath surface and surroundings
- Maintaining flower and herb beds
- Keeping vegetation under control
There is no fixed commitment required - everyone simply does what they are comfortable with. Volunteers meet at 10.00 on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and tea and cake are included.
