Warning over pushy cold callers in the local area

Residents near Haughton are being warned about cold callers offering driveway and exterior cleaning work at vastly inflated prices.

Stafford Borough Police has received reports of individuals knocking on doors in the Haughton area, offering to jet wash driveways and carry out exterior cleaning. Those who have agreed to the work have been charged well over the odds.

Police believe the callers may be deliberately targeting elderly and vulnerable residents, using high-pressure tactics and refusing to take no for an answer.

How to protect yourself

  • Do not feel pressured into agreeing to any work at your door.
  • Never hand over cash or make immediate payments for services you did not ask for.
  • Ask for identification and the name of the company they represent.
  • Get quotes from reputable local businesses before committing to anything.
  • Talk to a family member, friend or neighbour before making a decision.
  • Keep your door on the chain while speaking to anyone you do not know.

What to watch out for

Legitimate traders will always respect it if you say no. Be wary of anyone who is overly pushy, refuses to leave, or tries to rush you into a decision. Do not let unknown individuals into your home.

If you are concerned

If you have elderly relatives, friends or neighbours nearby, please let them know about these reports. If you spot suspicious cold callers or think someone is being targeted, contact Staffordshire Police on 101 or report it online. If you feel threatened or believe a crime is taking place, call 999 immediately.
