Don't cook after drinking
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue says more than half of the incidents it attends are caused by cooking accidents. With more people drinking alcohol during the World Cup, it is warning that the risk of accidental kitchen fires rises sharply.
Nick Jones, Head of Prevent, Protect and Partnerships, said: "Even if you've not had much to drink, the smallest lapse in concentration can be the difference between a fire starting and spreading. It is absolutely crucial that you don't cook when you've had a drink."
If you're hosting a gathering where people are drinking, the advice is simple:
- Put someone who isn't drinking in charge of the cooking
- Or order food in advance, or pre-prepare it before anyone starts drinking
- Never use a barbecue if you've been drinking
- Keep barbecues well away from fences, shrubbery and anything flammable
- Never leave a lit barbecue unattended
Plan your travel ahead
Staffordshire Police will be running extra patrols across the road network during the tournament to catch anyone drink or drug driving. The advice is to arrange transport to and from any venues well before you go out, so there's no temptation to drive after drinking.
