Bereavement Services

When someone dies, there is a lot to think about at exactly the moment you least want admin. This page is a quick, local starting point for Gnosall residents, with the official links you can trust and a few practical next steps to help you get organised.

Start here: Stafford Borough Council bereavement services

If you are arranging a funeral, booking a cremation or burial, or you simply need to understand the process, Stafford Borough Council is the key place to begin for local bereavement services. Their Bereavement Services pages explain what is available and how to make arrangements.

What to do first (the practical checklist)

  • If the death happened at home, contact the GP or NHS 111 for advice. If it is sudden or you are unsure, call 999.
  • Get the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death from the doctor (or hospital team). You will usually need this before you can register the death.
  • Register the death as soon as you can. For the official route and guidance, use Staffordshire County Council.
  • Once registered, you can make the funeral arrangements (your chosen funeral director can help, and the council bereavement team will guide you through bookings).

Registering a death (official Staffordshire guidance)

Registration is handled by Staffordshire County Council, and their pages set out what documents you may need, timeframes, and how appointments work.

Help with the admin: Tell Us Once

Once you have registered the death, ask about Tell Us Once. It is a government service that can notify several departments in one go (like DWP, Passport Office and DVLA), which can save a lot of time and repeated phone calls.

Local pointers and where to find more support

If you are not sure who covers what locally, Stafford Borough Council is the best first call for bereavement service arrangements, and Staffordshire County Council is the place for registration and certificates. For wider local services and signposting, you can also check with Gnosall Parish Council.

If you are supporting someone else, a simple, genuinely helpful step is offering to sit with them while they make calls or fill in forms. It is often the hardest bit to do alone.
