Staffordshire Police have issued a warning following a report of men visiting a residential property and pretending to be HMRC officials to get inside.
HMRC does not normally make unannounced home visits demanding immediate access, payment, or personal financial information - so if someone turns up at your door making such claims, treat it as suspicious.
What to do if this happens to you
- Do not let anyone in immediately, even if they claim to be from an official organisation.
- Ask to see identification and examine it carefully.
- Verify their identity by contacting the organisation directly using a number or website you find yourself - not one they give you.
- Keep your door secured while speaking to unexpected visitors, or use a door chain.
- Be wary of pressure tactics, such as being told you must act urgently or decide on the spot.
- Never hand over cash, bank details, or personal information to an unexpected caller.
- If in doubt, ask them to leave and return once you have verified who they are.
- If you suspect someone is acting suspiciously, note their description, any vehicle details, and the registration number if possible.
Please look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends, and family members who may be targeted.
If you believe a crime is in progress, call 999. For non-emergencies, contact the police on 101.
